When Thrusters Behave Badly
You are on the water. You hit the throttle. The thruster spins—but something is wrong. Speed drops. The motor runs hot. Strange noises come from the housing.
Performance issues in underwater thrusters rarely signal a catastrophic failure. Most are caused by a handful of common, fixable problems. Understanding these issues—and knowing how to address them—can save you from cutting a trip short or replacing expensive hardware.
Here are the five most common thruster problems and how to fix them.
Problem 1: Low Thrust or Power Loss
What it feels like: You expect the kayak to move forward smoothly, but it feels sluggish. The motor is running, but the push just is not there.
Most likely cause: Debris wrapped around the propeller shaft or worn battery connections.
The fix:

Check for fishing line, seaweed, or other material tangled behind the propeller—this area often traps debris

Remove the propeller and clear anything wrapped around the shaft

Inspect battery connections—loose connectors or undersized wire gauges cause high resistance and voltage drops

If you have been using the battery for a while, test with a known good battery to rule out cell degradation
Prevention tip: Rinse the propeller area after every use, especially after operating in weedy or sandy conditions.
Problem 2: ESC Overheating or Thermal Shutdown
What it feels like: The thruster runs fine for a while, then suddenly cuts out or reduces power. After a few minutes of rest, it works again—until it overheats once more.
Most likely cause: The motor is drawing more current than the ESC can handle continuously, or the thruster is overloaded for extended periods.
The fix:

Reduce continuous throttle—running at 80% instead of 100% can dramatically reduce heat buildup

Check that your propeller is matched to the motor—oversized props increase current draw significantly

Ensure the ESC has adequate airflow in the housing—sealed systems trap heat

Consider a higher-rated ESC if you consistently need full power operation
Prevention tip: For long trips, alternate between full power and coasting to give the ESC cooling breaks.
Problem 3: Strange Noises or Vibration
What it feels like: A grinding, clicking, or humming noise that was not there before. The thruster vibrates more than usual.
Most likely cause: Foreign object in the propeller, damaged blades, or bearing wear.
The fix:

Stop immediately—continued operation with a foreign object can cause permanent damage

Remove the propeller and inspect for chips, cracks, or warped blades

Clear any debris from the propeller hub

Problem 4: The Thruster Won‘t Start at All
What it feels like: You connect the battery, hit the throttle, and nothing happens. No sound. No movement.
Most likely cause: Dead battery, disconnected wiring, or ESC failure.
The fix:

Check battery voltage—below the ESC‘s low-voltage cutoff, the system will not run

Test with a different battery if available

If wiring and battery are good, the ESC may need replacement
Prevention tip: Always fully charge your battery before heading out and test the system briefly on land (out of water, for a few seconds only) before launching.
Problem 5: Reduced Speed Under Load
What it feels like: The thruster runs fine in the air but slows significantly once submerged and under load.
Most likely cause: Mismatched motor/propeller combination or overly high KV rating for the application.
The fix:

A high-KV motor that works in air may not have enough torque to spin the propeller underwater—low KV (150-350) is generally better for underwater use

Consider a smaller propeller to reduce load

Check voltage—if the battery sags under load, the motor loses torque
Prevention tip: When selecting a thruster, prioritize torque over top RPM—water is 800 times denser than air.
The Maintenance Mindset
Most thruster problems are preventable. The operators who get the most out of their equipment are not the ones who bought the most expensive thrusters. They are the ones who take a few minutes after each use to:
