Square Wave vs FOC ESCs: Which Is Better for Your Underwater Thruster & ROV Build?
If you’re building an ROV, underwater robot or custom boat, you’ve probably asked yourself this: should I use a square wave ESC or FOC ESC for my underwater thrusters?
Both drive brushless motors underwater, but they are engineered for very different jobs. Picking the wrong one can lead to frustrating performance issues or unnecessary extra cost.
Square Wave ESC
Square wave is the tried-and-true workhorse for underwater thrusters. Water creates natural hydrodynamic damping. It cancels out most torque ripple that square wave control produces. For standard navigation, visual inspection and simple forward/back movement, square wave delivers rock-solid thrust.
Pros
- Plug-and-play operation, no motor calibration required
- Great noise immunity, works reliably with long underwater cables
- Stable in wet, harsh environments with lower failure risk
- More affordable, perfect for hobby builds and larger batch projects
Downsides
- Slight vibration at extremely low throttle. This jitter only becomes noticeable when holding tiny, steady thrust for long-duration hovering.
FOC ESC (Field-Oriented Control)
FOC, short for Field-Oriented Control, uses advanced vector control to feed smooth sinusoidal current to your motor.
Pros
- Incredibly smooth low-speed thrust, minimal vibration and quiet operation
- Ideal for station keeping, underwater video recording and delicate sampling tasks
- Better power efficiency and less heat buildup under load
Downsides
- Must run motor auto-tuning before first use
- More sensitive to changes in motor winding parameters
- Higher price point
